With 2012 being a Paralympic year, there has never been a better time to promote an active, healthy lifestyle to your students while increasing awareness of some of the Paralympic sports that will form part of the Games in LondonHome of the 2012 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games..

 

The Paralympic Challenge comprises of 3 classroom activities and 18 physical sporting activities based on the Paralympic sports GoalballGoalball is a sport where the object is to roll the ball past the opposition defence and into the opponent’s goal. A bell inside the competition ball enables defending players to hear it and move to stop it going through the goal., Sitting Volleyball, BocciaBoccia is a bowling game. Leather balls are thrown as close as possible to a white target ball (“the jack”) on a long, narrow field of play., WheelchairThis refers to a group of athletes with a disability who are eligible to compete in wheelchair events. Some of the conditions resulting in eligibility into wheelchair events are: paraplegia, quadriplegia, spina bifida, poliomyelitis, amputee, cerebral palsy. Basketball, 5-a-Side Football (Blind Soccer) and Athletics. Students will gain points for each completed activity and will receive a bronze, silver or gold certificate at the completion of the Challenge, dependant upon the amount of activities they have completed.

 

It is highly recommended that you complete the classroom activities before starting the physical activities as this will give your students an overview of the Paralympic Games, its sports and athletes as well as knowledge on the different types of disabilities.

 

Equipment for some of the sports can be made available by filling in an online form.  You will need to be registered to access this.
